Walking
Downtown, the beach, and the college are all on foot from the door, down to the lake and back up again.

The streets here are steep. Haileybury is built on a hill above the lake, so every walk to the water is downhill and every walk home is a climb. Plan for the return leg, and take care on icy sidewalks in winter.
Walk times below are a router’s estimate from the house, and the climb back up can take longer.

A favourite walk with kids, and free. It’s an outdoor geology museum on the grounds of Northern College’s Haileybury campus, once the Haileybury School of Mines, just under 1 km long across 2 hectares with an arboretum. Two loops from the door
Town and lakefront loop
3.8 km, about 51 min
From the house to Rockwalk Park, down to Main St and Ferguson Ave, on to Haileybury Beach and the Pioneer Spirit statue, south along the lake to City Hall and the art gallery, and then up past the Shelley Herbert Shea Arena and home. The climb back from the lake adds time.
Hughes Lookout and the beach
2.9 km, about 39 min
North from the house to Hughes Lookout on Lakeshore Road South, back down to Haileybury Beach and the STATO path, and then home. Part of it follows Lakeshore Road, which has traffic.
Questions guests ask
Is there a good walking loop from the house?
Two. The town and lakefront loop passes Rockwalk Park, downtown, the beach, the fire statue, and City Hall, about 3.8 km and 51 minutes. The Hughes Lookout loop heads north to the lookout and back by the beach, about 2.9 km and 39 minutes. Both end with a climb.
Is it hilly around the house?
Yes, very. Haileybury climbs the hill above the lake, so the streets around the house are steep. Walks to downtown, the beach, and the marina mean real uphill and downhill, so allow extra time if hills are hard for you.
What’s Rockwalk Park?
A guest favourite. Close to 200 large rock and mineral specimens from across the north line a brick path at Northern College, each with its own sign. It’s free, 8 minutes on foot, and the loop is just under 1 km.
Where can we see the Hardy Boys history?
The Haileybury Heritage Museum, 575 Main St, has a McFarlane display with his typewriter, and it starts a self guided Ghosts of the Hardy Boys tour past his homes and his high school. A granite lectern on the waterfront honours him too. Call 705 672 1922.
Is there somewhere to get a massage?
Christina Geddes Wellness at 307 Main St in downtown Haileybury, about a 12 minute walk, offers therapeutic massage and bodywork. Appointments are required, so call 705 465 1903 or book through her site.
When is the art gallery open?
The Temiskaming Art Gallery, inside City Hall at 325 Farr Drive, is open Tuesday to Friday 10 AM to 4 PM and Saturday 10 AM to 2 PM, and closed Sunday. It’s free, a 17 minute walk. Call 705 672 3706 before a Monday visit.
Where can we learn about the 1922 fire?
The Great Fire monument stands in Harbourfront Park, about a 12 minute walk. The house itself came through the fire.
How far is downtown Haileybury?
A 10 minute walk, on steep streets with real uphill and downhill along the way.
